Perks of Hiring a Former Teacher as your Family Photographer
Before finding my calling as a family photographer, I was a preschool teacher and I got my degree in Early Childhood Development. It’s no secret that I have always loved to be around kids and that I know a few tricks on how to make things fun and interesting for the little ones. Not to mention, I am also a mama to a very sweet and sassy toddler. Childhood Development has always fascinated me and I love learning about how those little brains work. In fact, while I was pregnant, I read up on each stage of her development and haven't stopped since. It’s so interesting to see how my knowledge on this topic impacts how I parent and in turn, how she responds to research based methods. This all not only helps me with being a mom, but I apply it to my photography style. So if you are at all worried about how your child is going to behave through a photo session with me, there is absolutely no need to! It will be a fun and relaxed experience for you and your family!
Three Reasons Why Your Family Sessions With Me Will Be Easy Peasy!
ONE - I’m not after the perfect, all smiles picture.
While I appreciate the beautiful work of other photographers, it's just not where my heart is. I want to capture moments and emotions, not poses and “cheeses”. As a former teacher and a mom, I know all too well that life with kids just doesn't look that way. And forcing them to look that way is stressful for everyone involved. As a photographer, I am after raw emotion and “real” moments. I want your friends and family to see the photos and think “that is SO you guys!”
TWO - I take the time to get to know a little bit about you and your family.
This allows me to not only create a more personal experience for us all, but also to be prepared. I learned the importance of this early on when I started working as a teacher. Before the school year would begin, there would be detailed questionnaires sent out and opportunities to get to know the children and their families before spending an entire school year with them. While a photo session is at a much smaller scale than a full school year, I still apply this to the families I work with as a photographer. Just as teaching, I believe hiring a photographer to capture your moments is a personal choice and should be a good fit for you and your family. THREE - I have a pretty good understanding about how kids work.
I know little ones have a short attention span. I know that babies, especially newborns, are not at all concerned with your agenda or the fact that you booked and paid for a photo session at a specific time. If you need to feed your baby, change a diaper, sing a lullaby, tell a story, wipe a few tears… whatever the case may be, go ahead and do it. In my eyes, and in my mama heart, those are the most beautiful photo worthy moments in motherhood. The truth is, babies don’t know what's going on and older kids couldn't care less about taking photos and sitting still. And that's okay! Sit back, relax and enjoy this hour with your family. I'll take care of the rest!
There you have it! There is no need to worry about getting your children to cooperate for a session with me. It will be a stress free and fun experience for the whole family! 😉
