How To Find a Photographer That is Right For You

Choosing a photographer is a very personal choice and it is an investment. No matter what you are hiring a photographer for, you are hiring them to capture and document a time in your life that is meaningful to you.  Finding someone that is the right fit for you and what outcome you are hoping to receive means that a little research is required from you, the client.  I have put together a list on what to look for and how to hire your ideal photographer.

1. Think about what style of photography you are wanting and what style fits your aesthetic.

These photos will represent you, your family, your life, your memories. Do you want JCPenney photos, do you want perfect poses where every detail is perfectly curated, or do you prefer emotive photography that has feeling attached to a photograph? If you are looking for a wedding, family or newborn photographer, think about the colors in your home. Do you like dark, moody vibes or do you like a light and airy style? Does trendy speak to you more or do you prefer a more classic, clean aesthetic? These photos will most likely go on your walls. When you start to search for photographers in your area, pay attention to how they edit and the feeling their work brings to you.

2. Use google and social media to start your search.

Once you’re aware of which artistic style speaks to you, start googling and hash tagging. Looking for a lifestyle family photographer? Search “lifestyle family photographer in [your city]”. Looking for a lifestyle newborn photographer? Hash tag it! #stuttgartlifestylenewbornphotographer, #stuttgartnewbornphotographer, #coloradoelopmentphotographer… you get the gist. My favorite way to search is on Instagram using hashtags for specific areas.

3. Basing your decision solely on the cost is never a good idea.

I think we can all understand that budget is important. Photography is a luxury. Set a budget but be realistic. You will be disappointed if you choose someone for reasons other than who they are and what they offer. Sure, there are not-so-good photographers out there.  But chances are, you are going to get a gallery from your photographer that resembles that of their portfolio and the images they have posted on social media feeds. Find someone who’s work you love, not who’s price tag is cheaper than others’.

4. Once you have inquired, read all the information they send you.

Read the words on their website, read their captions on social media. Do they speak to you? Can you relate to this person? When you inquire, a photographer will most likely send you all the information you need to know to help you make your decision and answer any questions you may have. Chances are, a photographer wants to work with clients who genuinely like their work and who will be happy with the final product.  We have given you so much information so that YOU can decide if we are a good fit for each other.  We want you to be happy with what you receive from us and that is why we take the time to give you all the details you need BEFORE you commit.

5. Remember, hiring a photographer is a choice.

There is no one-size-fits-all. I am not for everyone and that is okay. There is a photographer for everyone, no matter what is it you are looking for.  Look for one that you will be excited to work with. Hiring a lifestyle family photographer and expecting overly posed, everyone-looking-at-the-camera-with-fake-smiles, JCP style is like going to a bbq restaurant and expecting them to have a full vegan menu.  Are you really going to give them a bad review or should you have done some research?? Hmmm.

When a photographer receives an inquiry, they are safely assuming you have inquired because you like their work and want similar images for yourself. Without doing your research, there’s a good chance you may end up with a photographer you may not have chemistry with and/or end up with galleries or final products you are not satisfied with.  As a result, this is a nightmare for both you and the photographer.

While I can’t speak for every photographer, I can tell you that I love what I do and I pour my heart into creating meaningful art for my clients and their families.  I want you to be happy with what you get from me and I strive to deliver galleries that are in line with what you see on my portfolio. I promise to give you the opportunity to decide if I am right for you before you commit to hiring me. If you don’t like me, that is okay! There is a photographer out there that will be a perfect fit for you.

I look forward to working with past and future clients who value my work and what I offer. I am here for you and all your beautiful moments worth documenting.

With love,

Nataile
